Immigration solicitors help people and businesses with the UK’s immigration rules: family and partner visas, work visas, sponsor licences for employers, extending or switching visas, indefinite leave to remain, British citizenship, and appeals and reviews when things go wrong.
This page is general information only. Your immigration position depends on your own history and the rules in force when you apply, which change often.
Immigration advice is a regulated activity. Solicitors regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority can give it, and so can advisers registered with the Immigration Advice Authority (formerly the OISC). Anyone else giving immigration advice as a business is committing an offence. Every firm listed on this site is on the SRA register, and you can check an individual solicitor there too. Be wary of anyone who guarantees success.
Partner and family visas, where the financial and relationship evidence requirements are strict. Skilled worker visas and sponsor licences, where the employer has ongoing compliance duties as well as the employee’s application. Applications after a refusal or where there’s a gap in immigration status. Settlement and citizenship applications, where history over several years is examined. Appeals and administrative reviews, which have short time limits.
Most firms quote fixed fees for particular types of application, and SRA-regulated firms have to publish price information for immigration applications (other than asylum). The Home Office fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge are paid on top and can be substantial; the current fees are on GOV.UK.
Immigration advice is regulated. Solicitors regulated by the SRA can give it, as can advisers registered with the Immigration Advice Authority. It is a criminal offence for anyone else to give immigration advice or services in the course of a business, so check an adviser before you pay them.
Only in limited cases, such as asylum and some cases involving trafficking or domestic abuse. Most visa applications are privately funded.
Yes, and many straightforward applications are made without one. Advice is worth considering where the rules are complex, your circumstances are unusual, or an earlier application was refused.
